Key Tips to Avoid Cavities During Orthodontic Treatment

Orthodontic treatment is the best way to achieve a straight, confident smile. However, braces and even clear aligners can sometimes make it harder to maintain oral hygiene—leading to a higher risk of cavities and gum problems if proper care isn’t taken.

As an orthodontist, I always remind my patients that a beautiful smile is not just about straight teeth but also about healthy teeth. Here are some key tips to avoid cavities during orthodontic treatment:

1. Brush Thoroughly and Frequently
With braces, food can easily get trapped around brackets and wires. Brush after every meal using an orthodontic toothbrush or an electric brush for better cleaning.

2. Don’t Forget to Floss
Flossing may seem difficult with braces, but using floss threaders or water flossers makes it much easier. If you’re wearing Invisalign, floss before reinserting your aligners.

3. Rinse with Fluoride Mouthwash
A fluoride rinse helps strengthen enamel and provides an extra layer of protection against cavities.

4. Limit Sugary and Sticky Foods
Candies, sodas, and sticky snacks can cling to braces or aligners and increase the risk of decay. Choose tooth-friendly snacks like fruits, nuts, or cheese.

5. Keep Aligners Clean
For Invisalign users, clean your aligners regularly with recommended cleaning solutions. Wearing dirty aligners can trap bacteria against your teeth.

6. Regular Dental Check-Ups
Along with your orthodontic visits, routine dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential to ensure cavity-free teeth throughout treatment.

Remember: Prevention is always easier (and less expensive) than treatment.
