Orthodontic Emergencies: What to Do If a Bracket Breaks

Orthodontic treatment is safe and effective, but occasional orthodontic emergencies like a broken or loose bracket can happen. At Anant Dental Clinic Orthodontic & Implant Center, Ahmedabad, we guide our patients on how to handle such situations calmly and correctly to avoid discomfort or treatment delays.

Is a Broken Bracket an Emergency?

A broken bracket is usually not a serious emergency, but it should never be ignored. If left untreated, it can cause irritation, pain, or prolong your orthodontic treatment.

What to Do If a Bracket Breaks

Stay Calm: A loose bracket won’t cause immediate harm in most cases.

Check the Bracket: If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place. If it comes off completely, keep it safe and bring it to your orthodontist.

Use Orthodontic Wax: Apply wax to prevent the broken bracket or wire from irritating your cheeks or lips.

Avoid Hard or Sticky Foods: This helps prevent further damage to your braces.

Contact Your Orthodontist: Schedule an appointment as soon as possible for repair.

What NOT to Do

Do not try to fix the bracket yourself.

Do not cut the wire at home.

Do not ignore ongoing pain or irritation.

Why Prompt Care Matters

Addressing broken braces early helps maintain proper tooth movement, prevents discomfort, and ensures your treatment stays on schedule.
